The Benton City School   was created in 1867 and started as a one room school house . There were over a hundred kids in the Benton City School. S.B. Potter was the only teacher at the Benton City School.
The first one room school in Lytle was built in 1839 and used until 1910. Three schools Benton City, Cole Mine and Lytle were consolidated in 1915. The Lytle School District formed when Professor Johnson donated money and his time to the community.  The wood from the Benton City School was used to make the Mexican American School.  In 1948 the Mexican American School was built across the street from the boys shower house.  The army gave them an army barracks to use as a school.
Across the street under the old oak trees is where the school grew.  It began as a two story and later they added a third story. The three story school   had a slide for the fire escape.
